چکیده

In this paper we experimentally document the existence of incomplete preferences in decision making under uncertainty. In a series of incentivized decision tasks subjects have to choose between a risky and an ambiguous prospect. Active choices between prospects can as well be avoided by selecting a fair chance device that eventually assigns one of the two prospects to the decision maker. We observe that half of the subjects repeatedly choose the chance device and show that behavior can not be reconciled with theories assuming completeness of preferences. In a second experiment we show that indecisiveness is robust to a prize variation and verify that the observed behavior is consistent with the existence of incomplete preferences relations. Our results also present a caveat to the presence of ambiguity aversion: rather than being averse to ambiguity per-se, subjects in our experiment appear averse to making choices under uncertainty. We also find a strong gender effect: female subjects are much more likely to avoid active choice. Draft version: comments highly welcome.

Objective and Subjective Expected Utility with Incomplete Preferences

This paper extends the expected utility models of decision making under risk and under uncertainty to include incomplete beliefs and tastes. The main results are two axiomatizations of the multiprior expected multi-utility representations of preference relation under uncertainty, thereby resolving long standing open questions. The Knightian uncertainty model and expected multi-utility model wit...

The arbitrage pricing theorem with incomplete preferences

This paper proves existence of equilibrium and the arbitrage pricing theorem for an asset exchange economy, where individuals' preferences may be incomplete or intransitive. This extends existing results to more general preferences. We also prove the arbitrage pricing theorem for a theory of choice under uncertainty by Bewley [Bewley, T. F. (2002), Knightian decision theory: part I, Decisions i...

The Identification of Preferences from Equilibrium Prices under Uncertainty

The competitive equilibrium correspondence, which associates equilibrium prices of commodities and assets with allocations of endowments, identifies the preferences and beliefs of individuals under uncertainty; this is the case even if the asset market is incomplete.

Incomplete Preferences under Uncertainty: Indecisiveness in Beliefs versus Tastes by Efe A. Ok,

We investigate the classical Anscombe–Aumann model of decision-making under uncertainty without the completeness axiom. We distinguish between the dual traits of “indecisiveness in beliefs” and “indecisiveness in tastes.” The former is captured by the Knightian uncertainty model, the latter by the single-prior expected multi-utility model. We characterize axiomatically the latter model. Then we...
